Bringing an equal abundance of experience and contacts to the company, Brian Porter has joined the outside sales group as regional sales manager; and Kent Henry has joined the sales team as sales engineer.

Porter will focus on all Caldwell products, including below-the-hook lifters, construction lifters, mill duty lifters, Renfroe clamps, and RUD lifting points. Caldwell partners with the RUD Group to unite their sales and marketing activities in North America for RUD material handling and lifting devices within a common organization. The RUD portfolio includes slings and lifting points for the most complex tasks for integration into almost any application.

Henry, a design engineer, will focus more specifically on Caldwell’s custom products, pointing his efforts at anything from moderate changes on standard products to more complex applications working in conjunction with distributors and end users to consult and develop solutions based lifting equipment. He will support all internal technical sales teams with specific end user applications and develop concept drawings where customers can view the engineered drawing and provide feedback on its feasibility for their project.

Jeff Ferchen, director of business development, said: “Both Brian and Kent bring a great deal of industry experience to our organization. Brian has deep knowledge and understanding of our product offering and has been instrumental in the distribution side of rigging and lifting his entire career. Historically working for some major distributors, he has always partnered with manufacturers to develop rigging solutions for cranes and BTH [below-the-hook] lifting equipment for major industrial, construction and OEM [original equipment manufacturer] end users.

“Kent also comes to Caldwell with a long history and knowledge of BTH lifting equipment. He spent the majority of his career with a major distributor partner of Caldwell’s in the Midwest, focused on engineering support for their sales team regarding any and all custom lifting solutions.

“We are excited to have both of these individuals join our growing team as we expand our solutions offering to better support our distributors and end customers.”

Porter said: “I have known Caldwell for all of my nearly 30 years in the industry. I have always admired the company as a leader and have enjoyed working with team members across its brands — people are the treasure of any company.

“It is all about relationships; we need to instil in our customers the attitude of ‘it is easy to do business with Caldwell’. We need to be superior communicators with our customers. The more we interact with them, the more we strengthen our bond with them. We have so many methods to communicate — and just need to utilize them.”

He added: “One particular end user I have already been working with is a leading manufacturer of aluminum sheet, plate, extrusions, and architectural products and systems.”

Henry, meanwhile, said: “I have been familiar with the Caldwell business, having previously worked for a major lifting and rigging equipment supplier with coast-to-coast coverage. I have a proven skillset in delivery of quotes on custom projects; I’m also looking forward to assisting the inside sales department with concept drawings and structural calculations.”

Sarcos Robotics Partners with Delta Air Lines to Bring First Public Demonstration of the Guardian XO Robot at CES 2020 https://industrialmachinerydigest.com/safety-maintenance/sarcos-robotics-partners-with-delta-air-lines-to-bring-first-public-demonstration-of-the-guardian-xo-robot-at-ces-2020/ Tue, 07 Jan 2020 22:25:45 +0000 https://industrialmachinerydigest.com/?p=52703 Delta Air Lines (NYSE: DAL) is partnering with Sarcos Robotics to explore new employee technology fit for a superhero – a mobile and dexterous exoskeleton designed to boost employees’ physical capabilities and bolster their safety.

Sarcos, the world’s leader in exoskeleton development, has developed the Sarcos Guardian XO, a battery-powered, full-body exoskeleton designed to boost human performance and endurance while helping to prevent injury. This robotic suit, designed for employees to wear, does the heavy lifting. By bearing the weight of the suit and the payload, the exoskeleton may enable an employee to lift up to 200 pounds repeatedly for up to eight hours at a time without strain or fatigue.

“We owe it to the best airline employees on the planet to explore how emerging technology can make their jobs safer and easier,” said Gareth Joyce, Delta’s Senior Vice President – Airport Customer Service & Cargo. “That’s why we sought out a partnership with Sarcos.”
Delta is the first company whose frontline employees have worked directly with Sarcos to determine potential operational uses for the Guardian XO. In November, Delta people representing Airport Customer Service and Cargo visited the Sarcos headquarters to see it in action and explore how wearable robotics could potentially benefit them in their everyday work.

The Guardian XO is designed for use in industries where lifting and manipulation of heavy materials or awkward objects is required and isn’t easily handled by standard lift equipment. Potential uses at Delta could include handling freight at Delta Cargo warehouses, moving maintenance components at Delta TechOps or lifting heavy machinery and parts for ground support equipment.

Exploring how advanced tools and tech can better support employees is one way Delta aims to improve workplace safety while extending its industry lead in operational performance for customers.

Delta plans to test the technology in a pilot location during the first quarter of 2020, giving employees the opportunity to experience the tech in a real-world setting and provide additional feedback on its functionality.

In addition to enabling superhuman strength for extended periods, the robotic suit may also level the playing field in terms of physical capacity. Roles that have historically been limited to those who meet specific strength requirements could potentially be performed by a more diverse talent pool, thanks to wearable robotics.

Ben Wolff, Sarcos CEO, said, “We look for companies who are clear leaders in tech adoption and have a history of innovating to meet the needs of their customers and their employees. Delta is the natural fit in the airline industry and has proven to be a great partner as we work to fine tune this technology for commercial deployment.”

Delta first started working with Sarcos in 2018 as part of its “X-TAG”, or exoskeleton technical advisory group, representing the aviation sector. This council includes ten of the Fortune 100 across a variety of industries, including industrial manufacturing, oil and gas, utilities, logistics, construction, automotive, aviation and aerospace.

At CES and want to see the Guardian XO for yourself? Stop by Delta’s booth (#14035) in Central Hall where attendees can get first-hand experience with the technology.

30 New Crawler Cranes, Aerial Lifts Added ALL Fleet https://industrialmachinerydigest.com/material-handling/cranes/30-new-crawler-cranes-aerial-lifts-added-all-fleet/ Fri, 28 Oct 2016 16:00:06 +0000 https://industrialmachinerydigest.com/?p=28235 ALL Expands Fleet of Crawler Cranes, Aerial Lifts

Addition of 30 machines grows fleet—and customer choice

Strengthening its hand at both ends of the lifting market, the ALL Family of Companies began the final quarter of 2016 announcing the acquisition of an equipment package consisting of large-capacity crawlers and aerial lift equipment, including boom lifts and telescopic forklifts. The two separate deals with leading-brand manufacturers Manitowoc and JLG will include 30 new machines.

crawler cranes

The Manitowoc purchase includes two 275-USt Manitowoc 999 crawler cranes. These crawlers are a perfect combination of capacity, reliability, and versatility, and are in such high demand that one of the new cranes will head straight to a job in Ohio. Also joining the crawler fleet is a new 220-USt Manitowoc 14000. With its long reach (up to 462 feet with the luffing jib attached), this is an extremely versatile crane. “We are using them in steel mills, power plants, water treatment plants, wind farms, and many types of new construction. They can set steel and precast concrete, among a wide variety of other applications,” said Michael L. Liptak, president of ALL.

ALL Aerials, the company’s nationwide aerial equipment division, continues to experience strong demand for their varied inventory of equipment. The company’s new JLG package includes 17 telescopic boom lifts, with horizontal outreach ranging from 33 to 80 feet, as well as 10 JLG telescopic forklifts (telehandlers). These range from the JLG 642, with a maximum capacity of 6,600 pounds, to the heavy-duty JLG G15-44A, the largest of JLG’s telehandlers, with a maximum capacity of 15,000 pounds. Telehandlers and boom lifts are maneuverable, efficient machines that offer real advantages on crowded job sites. Their power, versatility, and ability to work at awkward angles can directly and positively affect productivity.

“Our crawlers and aerials are in high demand,” explained Liptak. “We are really just responding to existing demand with these additional 30 units. We think the appetite for well-maintained, new-model equipment is always strong, so we define ourselves by our commitment to a modern, technologically-advanced fleet.”

Facilities Expansion for ALL Crane & Equipment Rental https://industrialmachinerydigest.com/fabrication/facilities-expansion-for-all-crane-equipment-rental/ Tue, 19 Jul 2016 16:34:48 +0000 https://industrialmachinerydigest.com/?p=24830 ALL Expands Facilities in Wisconsin and West Virginia

The ALL Family of Companies has increased both the size and service capabilities of its facilities in Elk Mound, Wisconsin, and Nitro, West Virginia.

ALL Crane & Equipment Rental Corp. of Nitro, West Virginia, is an area leader in heavy-haul trucking services and also functions as one of ALL’s major rebuild centers. The Nitro branch also specializes in repairing and maintaining ALL’s large fleet of crawler cranes—the biggest in North America.

ALL_feat

The Nitro facility acquired approximately 5-1/2 acres of land a mile away from their existing facility. The property includes five buildings that are being transformed to house a truck and trailer repair shop, a machine shop, a parts warehouse and office, a sandblasting and painting building, and a fabrication and welding shop. Work began last November and is expected to be completed this fall.

“We’ll really be able to increase the level of service we provide as a result of this new space,” said Chad Shamblin, general manager at the Nitro location. “We can do complete rebuilds in-house now, and we’re adding staff to compensate for the increase in business. We are hiring skilled, experienced workers from the area who have become unemployed due to the decline in local mining jobs. So the expansion is a win for us, our customers, and the region.”

Dawes Rigging & Crane Rental, Inc. in Elk Mound, Wisconsin, represents the ALL Family of Companies with full-service rigging and crane rental in western and northern Wisconsin, along with the Twin Cities area (Minnesota).

A 7-month expansion project added an impressive 14,400 square feet onto the Elk Mound facility, including three drive-through service bays: two to repair cranes and other lift equipment, and one a dedicated wash bay. The new service bays facilitate quicker turnaround on maintenance and repair jobs, which means shorter downtime for customers. The expansion also included conference/classroom space, which will become a training venue for employees and customers.

“Our equipment is very much in demand in this area, so any downtime has an impact on our customers’ timelines and budgets,” said Mike School, Elk Mound branch manager. “The additional space has greatly enhanced our service efficiency and processes.”
