Tasked with meeting the requirements of a technically challenging brief, Hoist & Winch demonstrated why it has become the nation’s go-to solution provider of high-quality lifting systems.

Many new tower block development projects face a common challenge: how to install large, heavy pieces of equipment into the building’s energy centre, typically located in the basement. Specifying the optimal hoists is paramount to project success. Fortunately, the subcontractor supplying and installing the energy room’s plant for this particular project knew where to turn for a turnkey lifting solution: Hoist & Winch Ltd.

Hoist and Winch
William Hacket low-headroom manual hoists were installed to overcome the issue of very tight headroom clearances due to the size of the equipment.

Hoist & Winch has extensive experience in all kinds of construction and industrial lifting applications. The company offers sales, installation, service, inspection, repair and hire services, with a special emphasis on project work. Supplying the optimal solution, with safety as the number one priority, is always the objective.

During the design phase, after formal tender and contract award, Hoist & Winch set about identifying the optimal solution by carefully assessing the specific lifting requirements. The project required the installation of hoists on both the upper and lower ground floor levels to ensure the successful lifting and transfer of large energy plant. It was clear from the outset that the solution would need to overcome the issue of very tight headroom clearances due to the size of the equipment.

Hoist and Winch
Offering a safe working load of 2.5t each, the hoists provide 8m of lifting height and run on beam lengths of 8.5m and 7.0m.

After thoroughly considering all aspects of the project, Hoist & Winch Ltd was able to put forward its proposal, recommending two William Hacket low-headroom manual hoists, both with a hand-geared trolley. Offering a safe working load (SWL) of 2.5t each, the hoists provide 8m of lifting height and run on beam lengths of 8.5m and 7.0m.

Hoist & Winch duly submitted its design proposal, including drawings and structural calculations, for approval by engineers at the main contractor. Following approval, the company commenced manufacture before delivery to site.

During the installation phase, Hoist & Winch tested the installation anchor points to 1t before raising each beam into position using hand chain blocks. Elevating the beams to full height and clamping them hard against the concrete ceiling ready for drilling required the use of special lifting rigs. Once in position, the company proceeded with drilling operations and resin anchor installation for all ceiling anchor points after meticulously cleaning each hole with a special heavy-duty internal brush and suction pump. Following the specified resin curing time, Hoist & Winch tightened each anchor bolt to the required torque levels.

Hoist and Winch
Hoist & Winch Ltd recently installed hoists for the successful lifting and transfer of a large energy plant within a residential tower block.

LOLER (Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations) inspection of the lifting beams and manual chain hoist units was the final operation. This activity included dynamic load testing of both beam lengths with a 2.5t skid-mounted test load followed by 125% static proof load test in accordance with BS 2853 2011. As a point of note, following customer handover, the hoists were to remain in place for use by the on-site maintenance team.

“We provided the client with a comprehensive project records and documentation package upon completion of works, which is standard practice,” says Hoist & Winch Director Andy Allen. “We then went through the handover process to ensure total peace of mind for our client. At Hoist & Winch, our focus is on ensuring customers benefit from our exceptionally knowledgeable team who never fail to deliver on their promise of providing a detailed and proficient approach to every project.”

Specht Industries Installs R&M Cranes, Hoists at Autoclave Systems Manufacturer https://industrialmachinerydigest.com/material-handling/specht-industries-installs-rm-cranes-hoists-at-autoclave-systems-manufacturer/ Tue, 17 Dec 2024 16:45:07 +0000 https://industrialmachinerydigest.com/?p=81736
The site is located a short distance from Specht’s facility in the same city. The end user, ASC Process Systems, is a manufacturer of special autoclaves and industrial ovens for the aerospace, composites, nuclear, vulcanizing and glass industries.

The original lead can be traced back to Crane Designer, R&M’s online configurating tool that offers recommendations and helpful information, based on specific lifting needs.

The quick, five-step process — available on R&M’s website — tells the manufacturer what the customer needs, so that it can help match the right crane and features to the application.

R&M
A combination of four overhead bridge cranes and two hoists were required.

These inputs include capacity, height of lift, span, environment and usage. Once the information is submitted, the configurator will generate an output page specific to the inputs entered. The output page includes crane drawings for the end user to share with a crane builder.

In this instance, the submission generated through Crane Designer was sent to Kimberly Cromwell, West Regional Sales Manager at R&M, who made the connection with the local crane builder in the region.

R&M
The original lead can be traced back to Crane Designer, R&M’s online configurating tool.

Cromwell said: “It allowed the end user to learn more about our equipment and request more information regarding R&M’s product offerings. The lead was passed to Specht Industries.”

Application

A combination of four overhead bridge cranes and two hoists were required for a new building, where loads of 5 tons to 30 tons needed to be handled.

Cory Demaio, Facilities Manager at ASC Process Systems, said: “My responsibilities are to facilitate and repair equipment as needed. The new cranes will be used in the manufacturing of our oven builds and loading to ship out to customers.”

Challenge

ASC was presented with the material handling challenge when sales of its ovens increased.

R&M
Specht Industries installed bridge cranes and hoists at the manufacturer of customized autoclave systems.

Demaio said: “In an effort to keep our shipping dates, we expanded and added another building, which required more overhead cranes. Previously, all of our production builds were being achieved in our two existing buildings that are at capacity.”

Specht Industries was asked to design a 30-ton structure with three 5-ton capacity bridge cranes and a single 30-ton capacity bridge crane, with two 15-ton capacity hoists.

Joe Specht, President and Owner at Specht Industries, said: “We overcame a 16-inch elevation slope within the facility, and larger-than-normal footings to meet seismic survey requirements. The customer needed to get the design, engineering, and the long lead time items within a two-month period.”

Solution

ASC requested the R&M brand since the other facilities already possess the R&M product. The owner wanted to stay with the same product so that maintenance could service all the cranes. The material handling fleet is primarily operated by an Autec wireless remote system provided by the R&M team.

Specht provided the full structure, American Society of Civil Engineering (ASCE) rail, runway electrification conductor bar, all bridge cranes, concrete work, installation, testing, and start-up.

OZ Lifting Shows New Tele-Pro Davit Crane at ProMat https://industrialmachinerydigest.com/safety-maintenance/oz-lifting-shows-new-tele-pro-davit-crane-at-promat/ Mon, 09 Dec 2024 18:16:53 +0000 https://industrialmachinerydigest.com/?p=81611
OZ Lifting Products LLC will show its upgraded Tele-Pro davit crane — and other industrial lifting products — at ProMat, which takes place March 17-20 at Chicago’s McCormick Place. See OZ Lifting at Booth S309.

The Winona, Minnesota-based manufacturer is known for a wide range of davit cranes, but the relaunched Tele-Pro, available in 500 lb., 1,200 lb. and 2,500 lb. capacities, allows users to telescope the boom in and out under load. All lifting specifications, hook reach, and lifting heights remain the same — but several improvements have been made, which will be seen for the first time by ProMat attendees.

The U.S. Patented Tele-Pro, which will be the centerpiece of a 10 ft. by 20 ft. booth, now features smoother boom operation under load; enhanced maneuverability; clearer capacity limits; industrial, high-visibility powder coat; and simplified maintenance. These five features will be showcased during on-site demonstrations.

Inspired by cutting-edge technology and advanced testing, OZ Lifting engineers have developed a smoother, more consistent telescoping experience, even under load. This improvement allows operators to handle loads with reduced resistance and strain, streamlining tasks and enhancing safety on the job. A handle has also been added to the crane, allowing for more accurate load rotation and control with a full 360 degrees of maneuverability. This added control is crucial for operators needing to position loads with precision in tight or high-stakes environments.

A high-visibility yellow powder coat finish now replaces the previous zinc-plated coating, boosting both durability and corrosion resistance. Additionally, new dual rating decals displaying both imperial and metric load capacities at various boom angles ensure that operators can quickly verify load limits in real time. The addition of top and bottom grease zerk fittings simplifies the lubrication process, extending the crane’s lifespan and enhancing overall performance without adding operational downtime.

Also making ProMat debuts will be a wheel base that can be used with the full range of davit cranes up to 1,200 lbs. capacity; and wireless adapters for electric chain hoists and builder’s (wire rope) hoists. The manufacturer offers the electric chain hoist in 500 lbs, 1,000 lbs., 2,000 lbs., and 4,000 lbs. capacities; and the builder’s hoist in 500 lbs. and 1,000 lbs. capacities. Wireless adapters are available for all models, apart from the lightest electric chain hoist. There is also room on the booth for a full range of lever and chain hoists, including stainless-steel and spark-resistant models.

Steve Napieralski, president at OZ Lifting, said: “ProMat provides us an opportunity to better serve and understand these vast and complex industries and markets. We’re conscious that we are among a dwindling community of lifting equipment vendors at the show; we often hear that we are one of the only hoist or lifting equipment manufacturers present, which allows us to strengthen our brand awareness. We like to understand the users’ applications and struggles in the field, which helps with the new product development evident on our exhibit.”

Prior to ProMat, OZ Lifting will celebrate 20 years in business and is preparing to relocate into a state-of-the-art 40,000 square-foot facility. A new website is also going live soon.

Napieralski will be joined in Chicago by Richard Miller, sales manager; and Ashley Blum, marketing manager.

OZ Lifting Launches Spark Resistant Range https://industrialmachinerydigest.com/material-handling/cranes/oz-lifting-launches-spark-resistant-range/ Thu, 17 Feb 2022 03:27:54 +0000 https://industrialmachinerydigest.com/?p=62926 The Winona, Minnesota-based manufacturer has targeted the products at applications where there are gas or dust particles that could create a spark. Typical markets include oil and gas, wastewater, paper, mining, and others where an explosive atmosphere exists.
The products are launched as a complete capacity range—0.5 ton, 1 ton, 2 ton, 3 ton, 5 ton, 10 ton—that covers most likely applications. As with other manual chain hoists in the catalog, 10 ft., 15 ft., 20 ft., and 30 ft. heights of lift are offered as standard, but custom lengths are available on request. All chain hoists and push beam trolleys are painted white, but distributors and end users might re-color them to suit protocols at specific facilities.

Steve Napieralski, president at OZ Lifting, said: “The products go hand in hand. We saw a need in the market for spark resistant manual chain hoists, and if you are going to offer them, you typically will be hanging the equipment from a trolley that also needs to be spark resistant. However, the products can work independently of each other. You might have a situation where the manual chain hoist doesn’t need to travel down an I-beam and is fixed in one location. And the trolley can accommodate either one of our manual spark resistant hoists or one that is powered.”

Explosive atmospheres

Potentially explosive atmospheres exist in many areas of industry. These explosive zones carry extremely strict guidelines and equipment requirements that standard catalog items cannot meet.

Both the new chain hoists and trolleys are manufactured in compliance with the EU’s explosion-proof standard ATEX94/9/EC and Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC. They can operate at explosion levels EX II2 GD c IIIC T135 C and are suitable for use in Zones 1 and 2 (gas) as well as Zones 21 and 22 (dust). The term “explosion proof” usually applies to electric-driven products, versus “spark resistant” for those operated mechanically, as Napieralski reiterated.

Key features of the hoists include unique hand wheel design; minimal load lifting effort; fully enclosed gearing; stainless steel or copper components; totally enclosed gearing; and suitability to lifting and pulling applications. The push beam trolleys, meanwhile, boast copper-plated trolley wheels and lifting bale; copper riveted identification tags; precision ball bearing trolley wheels; anti-drop plate; and compatibility with most I-, S-, and W-beams. Both products come with individual test certificate and serial number.

OZ Lifting will show its full range of davit cranes, hoists, and lifting components at MODEX 2022 (Booth B2926) on 28-31 March at Atlanta’s Georgia World Congress Center.

OZ Lifting Expands Industrial Chain Hoist Range https://industrialmachinerydigest.com/quality/oz-lifting-expands-industrial-chain-hoist-range/ Wed, 15 Dec 2021 17:43:03 +0000 https://industrialmachinerydigest.com/?p=62076 The Winona, Minnesota-based manufacturer already had 0.25-ton, 0.5-ton, 1-ton, and 2-ton capacity models in the line, but larger units have been added in response to ongoing demand for use with beam clamps, trolleys, and other industrial equipment.
Notably, the hoists do not feature overload protection, meaning they are well suited to utilization where the user knows the weight of the load they are lifting, such as when moving standard parts repeatedly on a production line or at a workstation.

Steve Napieralski, president at OZ Lifting, said: “If you know the weight of your load, our whole industrial range is perfect. The line of chain hoists has almost limitless applications, which allows us to market these hoists so broadly. Whether you’re hanging them from a beam clamp or trolley, or lifting any load now up to 5 tons, these hoists offer high quality at a fair price—a hallmark of our entire catalog.”

The effort required to lift using these hoists is consistent through the entire range and that of the company’s premium line, which is equipped with overload protection. The net weight of the product ranges from 4.7 lbs. on the lightest unit, up to 40 lbs. and 52 lbs. on the 3-ton and 5-ton models respectively. Standard heights of lift are 10 ft., 15 ft., 20 ft., and 30 ft., but custom rigging is available on both the hand and Grade 80 alloy load chain.

Napieralski said: “The all-steel construction, zinc-plated hand chain, long-lasting powder-coat finish, and fully-enclosed gearing, remain integral features of the line [of hoists] but, really, it is now the breadth of capacity range that channel partners and end users alike have noted. In stock and ready for sale, I expect the 3-ton and 5-ton capacity models to be just as popular as the existing, lower capacity products.”

Additional product features include forged alloy steel hooks, Weston-style brake system, thrust bearing on lower hook twin pawl, heavy-duty latches, and conformity with CE, ASME B30.16, and AS1418.2 standards. Each hoist is rigged, load tested, and comes with an individual test certificate, and extra set of latches.

Caldwell Provides Beam for Balancing Rolls https://industrialmachinerydigest.com/safety-maintenance/caldwell-provides-beam-for-balancing-rolls/ Wed, 27 Oct 2021 14:47:27 +0000 https://industrialmachinerydigest.com/?p=61689 The Caldwell Group has provided a 1,500-lb. capacity roll lifting beam and leveling system for a company that manufactures various types of hygienic wipes. A major advantage is that one operator can now complete the application instead of two.

The beam, which is 86 in. between the j-style hooks and 95.75 in. from end-to-end, is designed for unbalanced loads. In the end user’s application, it is common for a roll to be slightly off-center and the operator would previously have to handle the load or below-the-hook equipment to straighten it.

These substrate rolls must be lifted into place during an important phase of the production process. The method employed by this end user is unique, not because of its utilization of the beam, but in its incorporation of Caldwell’s load leveler product. The concept, which balances the roll before a worker performs the next operation, is operated by two pendant push-buttons.

Caldwell was initially given the nature of the material handling problem, in addition to the weight, width, height of rolls, and distance between the cradle support. Based on this, it was decided that a combination roll lifting beam and leveler would best suit the user’s requirements. The attachment works beneath the hook of Harrington Hoists’ equipment, to which it is attached by a hook and latch system. The lifter’s bottom hooks are not designed for side-loading, but they can pivot laterally. These j-hooks extend approx. 50 in. in length and are designed to handle a specific mandrel diameter.

Darrin Noe, director of sales at Caldwell, said: “A red / green indicator light notifies the operator that the leveler has engaged and which direction the bail is adjusting to accommodate for the load’s center of gravity location. The leveler can be used to adjust the lifter bail as needed to find the center of gravity. Once the leveler indicates a level lift, the operator can continue to move, rotate, and position the load as needed.”

Caldwell’s leveler, originally used strictly for the Posi-Turner product, is now used in multiple applications where it is beneficial to have a control system that senses when a load is out of level and automatically activates the leveling adjustment on the lifter to level the load. Besides added speed and efficiency, the leveling option brings added safety to many types of lifting requirements by allowing the operator to stand a safe distance from the suspended load.”
