Micro molded parts are typically smaller than a dime and require a high degree of accuracy. Stockwell Elastomerics’ investment builds upon an expansion of its Molding Business Unit in 2022 that added new personnel and equipment for a 20% increase in capacity.

“Stockwell Elastomerics is committed to meeting the needs of customers in industries ranging from medical and healthcare to electronics, aerospace, defense, and emerging technologies”, said Tom Rimel, Jr., President of Stockwell Elastomerics. “Our investment in this new injection molding equipment expands our micro molding capabilities and positions us for additional growth.”

As experts in silicone gasket solutions, Stockwell Elastomerics offers a variety of fabrication and molding methods, including liquid injection molding and compression molding. The company’s new Sodick GL30A-LSR injection molding machine supports small LSR parts with tight tolerances molds with small cavities for efficient high-volume production. Stockwell Elastomerics has additional injection molding equipment for larger parts with small features.

Stockwell Elastomerics selected the Sodick GL30A-LSR injection molding machine to ensure the more consistent filling of small, intricate cavities. The hydraulic-supported clamping unit for this automated equipment provides a wider range of clamping tonnage, up to 440 kN. Higher tonnages help prevent leaks and short shots, the incomplete filling of mold cavities. The press’ clamping system also supports a wider variety of high count and multi-up molds.

Among its advantages, this clamping system helps reduce mold flash for more efficient cryogenic deflashing, a secondary process that removes excess material. Stockwell Elastomerics’ new machine also provides stable flow rates and clamping pressures for part accuracy down to a micron tolerance level. Material is injected via a hydraulic accumulator system, allowing for high-speed injection when it is needed and greater control when it is not.

In addition to a Sodick GL30A-LSR injection molding press, Stockwell Elastomerics recently invested in a new dual-head waterjet machine and closed-loop system. The dual-head waterjet will improve throughput because it has a larger cutting envelope size and faster cut speeds of .01 in/min to 900 in/min. Stockwell Elastomerics anticipates running many parts with this dual-head function to decrease lead times and serve customers faster.

First Wireless Strain Measurement System to Measure Tie Bar Bending and Cavity Pressure Profile https://industrialmachinerydigest.com/quality/first-wireless-strain-measurement-system-to-measure-tie-bar-bending-and-cavity-pressure-profile/ Wed, 19 Jul 2023 15:07:21 +0000 https://industrialmachinerydigest.com/?p=76188 Gefran Inc. is introducing the QE2008- W wireless strain measurement system to the North American market for die-casting and injection molding applications. With a sampling rate of up to 1,000 measurements per second, the QE2008-W system accurately measures clamping force, bending, and cavity pressure profile to help manufacturers maintain quality control, protect equipment from damage and enable effective collaboration and communication for production teams.

“Gefran’s Sensormate app serves as the digital interface for the QE2008-W system and with a connection to your network, users can locate the sensors wirelessly through our app and then download measurements as raw data or put the information into a chart,” said Gefran product specialist, Nikunj Patel. You can quickly summarize all your test values and measurement data into a PDF report, include screenshots, and add comments to give readers contextual details or troubleshooting notes.”

When paired with Gefran’s Sensormate app, the QE2008-W easily connects to smartphones, tablets, and computers, allowing multiple users to quickly capture, analyze, and share measurement data. The Sensormate app is downloaded for free from the Microsoft Store, Google Play, and Apple App Store, and each QE2008-W system comes with a protective carrying case containing eight sensors that mount magnetically to tie bars.

GefranThe QE2008-W helps with mold alignment so that force is equally distributed, thus minimizing issues such as flashing, plastic deformation, or mold damage, and when compared to traditional bonded strain gauges, the QE2008-W installs in minutes. No wiring is required. The sensors connect to the app using Bluetooth technology, and the micro-electro-mechanical (MEM) chips inside the QE2008-W sensors ensure proper placement and orientation. Whenever the QE2008-W is connected to the app, it will also check for firmware updates and the sensors are updated through the app.

“To mitigate the impact of bending forces, the QE2008-W uses four sensors, evenly distributed around the tie bar, mounted at 90-degree intervals. By averaging the readings from these sensors, the QE2008-W measures maximum tension to determine the angle and direction of the bend, achieving greater accuracy of tension and compression measurements for each tie bar,” shared Gefran product manager, Theng Theng Chua.

The QE2008-W’s fast acquisition readings can also measure the cavity pressure profile which is the indirect pressure on tie bars during the injection cycle. Knowing the cavity pressure profile accelerates production efficiency and makes it easier to sustain high product quality. It is an ideal method of analysis for plastic injection molding machines because the sensors are non-invasive. They can be reused on multiple machines and several types of molds. The QE2008-W also costs less to operate compared to permanent methods of measurement.

The QE2008-W is equipped with a Bluetooth low-energy communication system, and it is the first wireless strain measurement system with an integrated accelerometer (MEM chips). This means sensor mounting can be done easily, with no diameter- dependent templates or guessing required. The accelerometer accurately determines the sensor’s relative position using gravity, for the calculation of its angle in relation to another sensor and the sensor’s indication lights offer clear guidance on placement or repositioning to ensure accurate alignment.

The QE2008-W also has integrated RAM inside each sensor to allow for measurements at a rate of 1kHz and the strain measurements are securely saved in the sensor’s RAM during the measurement period. Once a measurement is complete, the sensor seamlessly transmits the saved data to the Sensormate app for further analysis and reporting.

“By capturing and analyzing data, manufacturers can gain valuable insights into the performance of their machines. This information enables them to optimize production by preventing machinery failures, eliminating downtime, and ensuring their tie bars can withstand demanding conditions,” said Gefran general manager, Tapan Mody.

“The QE2008-W is a tool that ensures operational excellence.”

The 3-Dimensional Services Group Addresses Sustainability and Turns “Green” in Celebration of Its 30th Year https://industrialmachinerydigest.com/fabrication/the-3-dimensional-services-group-addresses-sustainability-and-turns-green-in-celebration-of-its-30th-year/ Thu, 24 Mar 2022 18:40:37 +0000 https://industrialmachinerydigest.com/?p=66694 The 3-Dimensional Services Group, a leading production-intent prototype and low-volume production firm will honor its 30th Anniversary with an Arbor Day Foundation corporate partnership and initiative of financial support to plant 100,000 trees in Michigan. The effort headlines the company’s commitment to the sustainability of our resources.

As part of the 3-Dimensional Group’s commitment to sustainability, the company has commenced a partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation, the largest member nonprofit organization dedicated to planting trees. Since 1972, the Foundation has planted almost 500 million trees worldwide.

Trees are increasingly seen as a powerful way to reverse the damage done by climate change and address the urgency of preserving the necessities of life – like clean air and water, healthy food, and a livable climate.

Through the Arbor Day Foundation, the company has committed to planting over 30,000 trees in Michigan State Forests along with 61,565 trees in the Huron-Manistee National Forest in April and May as well as 8,435 trees in Michigan school properties during the spring and fall of 2022.

Together with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, The 3-Dimensional Services Group is striving to replant Michigan’s state lands on a large scale. This project will replant native stands of Jack Pine and Red Pine, with a small percentage of White Spruce and Eastern White Pine also incorporated. But most importantly, these trees mean forests across Michigan will see improved habitat for a wide variety of wildlife including deer, turkey, grouse, and — most notably — the Kirtland Warbler. With thousands of lakes and miles of sparkling rivers and streams, the Huron-Manistee National Forests epitomize the splendid beauty of the Great Lakes region. The trees will also serve as a habitat for Shorebirds, Gulls, Eagles, Hawks, Loons, and other area wildlife. By partnering with the Arbor Day Foundation, Trees for School Forests will plant more than 110,000 trees at 10 school forests in Michigan. The goal is to reduce runoff into the Great Lakes and teach more than 1,000 students how trees protect water quality. This program will help to restore watersheds, maintain healthy ecosystems and address non-point source pollution.

Further, the company continues to add to its commitment to sustainability by using LED lights in all its manufacturing facilities, and by implementing a reclaimed and reprocessed water retention filtration system.

According to Doug Peterson, Founder, and CEO, “We’re proud and very pleased to be working with the Arbor Day Foundation. Although we are a manufacturer, we’ve always kept a close eye on how to maintain an environmentally-conscious balance. In the early days of our company, we used battery-operated golf carts to get customers and workers to and from our plants and still do today, and we used hydrogen-powered pickup trucks to deliver completed parts to our customers. Today, we’re playing a key role in automotive electrification by working with industry leaders and disruptors to accelerate its adoption. It’s good to see that we continue to keep an eye on sustainability as we grow.”

3-Dimensional Services, the original company within the group, started in 1992 with five employees and now with numbers over 600. The group is a full-service

accelerated manufacturing firm that specializes in “on-demand” development manufacturing, production-intent prototype parts and lower-volume production runs for industries such as military, automotive, aerospace, furniture, medical, communication, biomedical research, energy, household appliances, packaging, and toys. The group covers seven facilities and boasts over 500,000 sq. ft. of manufacturing space.

The company’s capabilities include bridge tooling, prototyping, fabricating, laser processing, CNC machining, plastic injection molding, assembly, patterns, and models.

The company thrives on investing in the latest technologies to provide leading-edge services to its customers. It was a pioneer in the use of industrial laser processing and rapid prototyping technology (think 3-D printing) and was one of the first prototype shops in the U.S. to develop its own laser welding assembly machine.
