TJ Davies Celebrates 60th Anniversary https://industrialmachinerydigest.com/tooling-workholding/holding-products/tj-davies-celebrates-60th-anniversary/ Tue, 22 Apr 2025 15:01:40 +0000 https://industrialmachinerydigest.com/?p=138035 T.J. Davies Co., Inc., an industry leading manufacturer of retention knobs, celebrated their 60th anniversary earlier this year. The 2nd generation family-run manufacturer may be heading into their 7th decade, but they are not resting on their laurels as they continue to invest in new technology and have several new product lines in the offing. In addition to offering the industry’s widest range of retention knobs, the company manufactures custom machine components, typically for older machines where parts are hard to obtain or are no longer available. They continue to strive toward the goals of their founder – to provide best-in-class, American-made products and back them with superior customer service.

“We’re proud of our heritage and strive each day to attain dad’s original goal of earning every customer’s trust with each order they place,” said TJ Davies President Sherry Davies. “Closely working with every customer allows us to better understand their issues and how we can help them. Those discussions have led us to continue our investment in equipment and technology and in the development of new product lines – all 100% American-made and backed with exceptional customer service.”

Over the past year the company has purchased several new CNC lathes for standard and custom machine components and updated some of their testing equipment. A new Starrett optical comparator allows them to reverse engineer custom components.

“This is an investment in the future and a testament to our belief in American manufacturing,” continued Davies. “We continually strive to get better, and the Mazak will help us to achieve that. We’re able to machine components from raw bar stock to ready-for-heat treat status around a common axis. That means better concentricity and precision which helps our customers make their products better.”

In addition to striving to make the manufacturing community better, Davies and her team are active members of their local community as well. They hosted their first ever Toys for Tots toy drive last year and are already planning how to collect even more toys next season. They also helped aspiring engineers get a firsthand look at engineering when they sponsored the Emerging Engineers summer camp through Kent State University College of Aeronautics and Engineering last summer.

“It is a real pleasure to support our local community as well as our manufacturing community,” said Davies. “We’re looking forward to exhibiting at PMTS and are already planning for the 2026 IMTS. The future is bright and I’m sure dad would be proud that his core mission still drives us today.”

Mr. Reid had been selling and servicing products from all three Jergens business units – Workholding, lifting and fasteners – since 1998.

“I feel very fortunate to have had such a productive relationship with so many of the folks at Jergens”, said Reid. And the feelings are mutual. “We appreciate his skills, support and accomplishments as one of the original Canadian Jergens Reps for the last two and a half decades”, said Matt Schron, vice president and general manager for Jergens. “On behalf of the entire organization I want to thank Tom for his twenty-five-year partnership with us and to wish him and his family the very best in his retirement”, continued Schron.

Jergens Inc. Adds Adaptix™ Vise Jaws for Highly-Configuarable Part Holding https://industrialmachinerydigest.com/metalworking/machining/jergens-inc-adds-adaptix-vise-jaws-for-highly-configuarable-part-holding/ Sun, 08 Oct 2023 16:56:26 +0000 https://industrialmachinerydigest.com/?p=77228 Jergens partners with Norgren to engineer the Adaptix™ vise jaw system into its line of production vises. The unique design – which incorporates sliding fingers with replaceable studs and fingertips – clamps challenging workpieces quickly and securely for machining. With this, Adaptix™ is mounted to the vise body in place of standard jaws to accommodate part configurations, adapting to asymmetrical and other features quickly.

The high gripping force ensures precision throughout the machining process. Once the lockable fingers have been adjusted to the workpiece, which takes only moments, remaining parts are clamped in and out quickly and with high repeatability, resulting in more uptime and tight tolerances. Because these shapes can be set up very fast, Adaptix™ is well-suited for high mix, low volume applications including short production runs and prototyping. The moving parts of the jaws – fingers, studs and fingertips – have been engineered for many thousands of actuations and are also easily field serviced if needed.

Adaptix™ offers a productive solution where soft jaws leave off. Often a choice when holding workpieces with unusual features, soft jaws perform well but require, among other things, longer time to setup. In some cases, that is upwards of two hours, whereas Adaptix™ requires an average of approximately 20 minutes and offers superior accuracy and repeatability. Additionally, this flexible system reduces the need for multiple soft jaws, helping to lower overall tooling inventories and associated costs.

Adaptix™ is designed so fluids and chips won’t interfere with operation. The system’s studs are available in different materials including aluminum and steel. Step profiles and other shapes provide gripping flexibility. The jaw system is compatible with industry vises such as Jergens 6” production vise. Packages with vise and jaws, or Jaws only, are available.

For information about Adaptix™, or any of the Jergens range of workholding solutions, contact the company at 15700 S. Waterloo Road, Cleveland, OH 44110-3898. Phone: 877-486-1454; Fax: 216-481-6193; e-mail: info@jergensinc.com; or visit on the web at www.jergensinc.com.

Buy Your Favorite Tools, Support Your Local Schools  https://industrialmachinerydigest.com/workforce-development/buy-your-favorite-tools-support-your-local-schools/ Wed, 20 Sep 2023 14:25:02 +0000 https://industrialmachinerydigest.com/?p=76966 For the second year in a row, customers who choose best-in-class cutting tools, tool holders and workholding products from BIG DAISHOWA will support their local manufacturing training programs at the same time.

From October 1–December 29, 2023, the company will once again donate a tooling certificate valued at 20 percent of every qualifying order to the buyer’s school of choice through the Tools for Schools program. Schools can redeem certificates for any BIG DAISHOWA products, including best-in-class tool holders, boring tools, cutting toolsworkholding products and presetters.

Last year’s program was a resounding success: BIG DAISHOWA issued nearly $30,000 in tooling certificates to high schools, vocational schools, colleges and universities. According to Jack Burley, President/COO, it’s all in line with the company’s overall mission to support a new generation of skilled workers.

“We are committed to workforce development. This program allows our customers to support local communities by providing their future workforce with the same tools they use in their shops,” said Burley.

To participate in the program:

  • The qualifying minimum order is $5,000 (earning a $1,000 tooling certificate).

  • Place the order through your local distributor and request “Drop-ship from BIG DAISHOWA.”

  • Reference “PROMO-BD-SCHOOLS” as a line item on your order.

Burley says that every dollar spent helps students develop skills they can apply in their careers. “By using BIG DAISHOWA tooling in school, students gain experience with the same tools they will use as future engineers and machinists.”

BIG DAISHOWA offers nine product lines of precision tooling, workholding, and tool management systems aimed at reducing both the overall process time and the cost per part.

Popular products include face mill holders, end mill holders, collet chucks, angle heads and tapping adaptors. The world-leading KAISER Boring System, high-performance Sphinx Drills and UNILOCK Workholding systems are also available, as are CAT, BT, HSK and BIG Capto systems.

Kurt Workholding unveils new TriLock 3-in-1 vise https://industrialmachinerydigest.com/quality/kurt-workholding-unveils-new-trilock-3-in-1-vise/ Tue, 22 Aug 2023 16:22:35 +0000 https://industrialmachinerydigest.com/?p=76694
Minneapolis-based Kurt Workholding announced the launch of the Kurt TriLock product line, featuring 3-in-1 vise design and integrated quick-change dovetail jaws from newly acquired CARVESMART. Six-inch Kurt TriLock vises quickly convert between three vise sizes and double-station or single-station configurations. CARVESMART dovetail jaws come standard for maximum workholding flexibility. Preinstalled hardened steel jaw plates can quickly convert to CARVESMART machinable aluminum jaw extrusions or a wide variety of other CARVESMART jaw plate options for custom part holding and high-variability production work.

“The new TriLock vise is a leap forward in vise functionality for Kurt’s customers,” said Jeff Lenz, Executive Vice President of Proprietary Products at Kurt Manufacturing. “A shop can purchase a single TriLock vise, keep an inventory of CARVESMART machinable jaw extrusions, and quickly change between multiple complex part shapes on multiple jobs.”

Kurt WorkholdingTriLock vises with CARVESMART jaws are on sale now with preinstalled hard jaws and a set of 6″ extruded machinable aluminum jaws. Additional jaw extrusions are available with 5 different profile options in precut 4-inch, 6-inch and 8-inch widths. Jaw extrusions are compatible with the TriLock vise’s dovetail movable jaws and with other CARVESMART master jaw kits currently in the marketplace (at right). 31″ and 94″ extrusions are also available for customers.

TL6CSP TriLock Vises are designed to quickly convert between a standard 6-inch double-station vise, a single-station vise and a large single station vise, and can hold parts as large as 11 inches.

Kurt recently announced the acquisition of Bellatex Industries LLC, Owner of CARVESMART™—the original dovetailed quick-change vise jaw system. In an asset acquisition, Kurt acquired all CARVESMART patents and inventory. Kurt is selling the CARVESMART dovetail jaw system directly on kurtworkholding.com.

Kurt not only acquired a new product line, but they also invested in the entire team at Bellatex, Industries LLC. Founder, Bill Ehnstrom, has joined Kurt Workholding’s sales and product teams as an Applications Engineer and will help to integrate CARVESMART jaws into new and existing Kurt products. Christine Ehnstrom has been hired as the Administrative Support Lead for the CARVESMART product line, and Carl Blaske will continue as the lead CNC machinist for the product line.

“The CARVESMART dovetail jaw system was created to help shops with a handful of machines manage high-variability jobs and multiple parts,” said Bill Ehnstrom, CARVESMART founder. “The dream was not only to produce great accessory jaw plates, but to bring a complete CARVESMART vise to market. Joining the Kurt team lets us help to bring the TriLock vise to market and to expand into additional product lines.”

Kurt TriLock vises and all CARVESMART products are available now at kurtworkholding.com.

MSRP is $3,299 for the Kurt TL6CSP TriLock Vise with CARVESMART hard jaws installed and soft jaws included.
