The 500 Series is designed specifically for the flow characteristics and unique processing challenges of elastomeric compounds. One of the key features engineered by Guill on this new crosshead design is the mechanically assisted gum space (MAGS) adjustment system. This new method of gum space adjustment allows the operator to make an effortless adjustment from a single point using a common socket wrench. No more need to struggle with multiple nuts and bolts in order to adjust gum space, which leads to faster adjustments. The visual indicator on the core tube allows the operator to see how far the gum space has been moved, making those adjustments much more accurate and repeatable.

The hardware-free and patented cam lock design of the NEW 500 Series from Guill means no time is wasted unbolting and re-securing fasteners for disassembly and re-assembly. Only half of a rotation of the cam nut is required to loosen and automatically extract the deflector from the head body, which is another time saver. Also, with no undercuts on the deflector, there are no material hang-ups when extracting the deflector, allowing for faster and easier cleaning and changeover.

The NEW 500 Series also features the latest Center-Stage concentricity adjustment system that significantly reduces pressure on the tooling, allowing easier and more precise concentricity adjustments without loosening the face bolts. Easy-Out inserts for the adjusting bolts also allow simple replacement of locked or damaged adjusting bolts, which further saves on repair and downtime.

Another innovative feature of this new rubber/silicone crosshead is a cast aluminum liquid-fed cooling sleeve that allows the user to switch out the cooling jacket in the event of a line obstruction, again reducing downtime compared to traditional integrated cooling systems.

The NEW 500 Series crosshead with MAGS gum space adjustment is a drop-in replacement on most existing NRM lines, however this crosshead design can also be adapted to fit any extruder design or line layout.

The addition of a newly designed flow inlet channel reduces the shear and heat that is generated as the materials are being processed. This leads to lower head pressures allowing the material to move through the head in a much more balanced and even flow.

All crossheads supplied by Guill are furnished with a tool kit for assembly and disassembly as well as a detailed operator’s instruction manual. The engineering team at Guill will gladly assist users in the implementation and operation of the NEW 500 series crosshead.

Fixtureworks Bolsters Its Lineup of Manual One Touch Snap Clamps, Both Push/Pull and Toggle. https://industrialmachinerydigest.com/quality/fixtureworks-bolsters-its-lineup-of-manual-one-touch-snap-clamps-both-push-pull-and-toggle/ Fri, 20 Dec 2024 16:21:46 +0000 https://industrialmachinerydigest.com/?p=81769
Fixtureworks (Fraser, MI), a leading North American manufacturer and supplier of clamps, fixturing accessories, machine tool components and rollers & bumpers, has bolstered its array of manual-style snap clamps adaptable to different industrial applications and systems. The snap/spring clamps are mechanical clamps with constant clamping force by spring pressure without tools. The handle clicks at its clamping end, leading to error-free secure clamping. The clamping force generated by a spring is always constant, preventing over/under tightening and workpiece damage.

The manual snap clamps feature both push/pull identified as QLSNS, the toggle QLSND hold down snap clamp and the QLSNDM miniature version hold down clamp.

The clamps use a unique snap-on system to provide uniform and positive clamping in one smooth operation. As the handle is applied to the clamp, the internal mechanism works to build tension. At a specified point, the tension is released and transformed into clamping force. This allows uniform clamping force with every cycle. These snap clamps offer excellent durability and will not become weak or unstable after repeated use like traditional toggle clamps.

The QLSNS push/pull snap clamp version comes in heights from 133 to 157 mm with clamping force to 50-140N (37 to 103 lb.). The QLSND toggle clamps come in heights from 140 to 158 mm with clamping force to 20 to 60 N (15 to 44 lb.). The QLSNDM miniature toggle clamps come in heights from 39 to 53 mm with clamping force of to 10 to 30 N (7 to 22 lb.).

In particular, toggle clamps offer a high quality, durable alternative to other clamps. The non-slip ergonomic handle allows for easy and comfortable use with smooth edges to prevent snagging. All snap clamps are excellent for light duty and fast clamping for inspection, assembly, and other applications.

In addition to one touch push and toggle clamps, Fixtureworks offers quick change flex locators, shaft locking clamps, other quick change pneumatic clamping fasteners, quick action spring plunger clamps, handle and levers, knobs and grips, equipment handles, hand wheels and cranks, hinges and latches, leveling supports, industrial rubber bumpers, stops and wheels, fixture clamps, clamping locating systems, work positioning elements, vises, grippers and mechanical linear actuators.

Optimizing installation space and performance with thread tapping screws https://industrialmachinerydigest.com/robotics/assembly/optimizing-installation-space-and-performance-with-thread-tapping-screws/ Mon, 27 May 2024 16:49:10 +0000 https://industrialmachinerydigest.com/?p=79627 When joining lightweight metals, the focus is on the installation space available and on optimizing performance and cost, as well as on the reliability of the fastening. And in light of that, an important point is the optimisation of the fastening´s load capacity. When fastening lightweight metals the focus is on the installation space available and on optimizing performance and cost.

Arnold Umformtechnik GmbH & Co. KG developed the Powertite fastener to cope with such situations − a round self-tapping screw with a trilobular tapping zone. In other words where the forming work is taking place, the screw has a slightly triangular cross section (with rounded edges) to reduce the tapping torque. At a length of 3 x p (p=pitch) the tapping zone is optimized, allowing the forming work during the tapping process to be distributed over several thread flights, and ensuring that the screw is optimally set and centered.  The round load cross-section has a defined overlap; the external diameter of the screw is always greater than the nominal dimension. This enables a greater overlap on the thread flanks of the screw and of the tapped nut thread. By combining this trilobular shape in the tapping zone, and the round cross-section in the bearing zone, we achieve a significant improvement in thread-tapping screw fastenings, because, on one hand, the tapping torques are low, and on the other, the overturn torques and load-bearing capacity of the tapped nut thread are greatly increased.

It is possible to create a computerized preliminary design for a specific application using the Fast Designer Metals tool. Here, Arnold Umformtechnik always makes a recommendation for a suitable core hole layout .

 Huge savings potential possible

ArnoldThere are many examples of ways in which thread tapping Powertite can be used. They are applications, for example, where there is a need to implement maximum clamping forces with over-elastic assembly. And the Powertite is also suitable for component assemblies where the screw-in depth is low, yet high hole tolerances are necessary. And in many cases, it is possible to reduce weight by reducing the length of the screw and optimizing the weight of the screw heads.

The Arnold Powertite screw is a round thread-forming screw with a polygonal tapping tip and a trilobular tapping zone. The round load cross-section has a defined overlap.

With the thread tapping Powertite the load capacity of the tapped nut thread was raised by over 20 per cent compared with standard trilobular screws. That brings with it a host of technical benefits: standards-compliant tapping torques, over-elastic assembly, including into conical cast core holes in GD-Al, pre-clamp load level similar to metric screw fastenings and the possibility of greater core hole tolerances to optimize the casting process in lightweight metals. Added to this is Powertite´s excellent assembly reliability and the fact that it can be used in steel, as well as aluminum and other lightweight metals. Moreover, it is possible to carry out repeat fastenings, and when service is required, the fasteners can be replaced by metric screws.

Applications for Powertite focus on the electromobility sector. This is particularly true for lightweight metal screw fastenings, but also when combined with cast components. The product, which has already been patented, will be launched on the market in October.

Potential customers will have their accustomed access to the complex knowledge of the product acquired by the fastenings manufacturer, based in Forchtenberg, and also to its comprehensive understanding of the product´s performance in the various applications and sectors. All that is enhanced by the relevant calculation tool and wide-ranging  experience and expertise in manufacturing. Together with development partners in the tool-making sector, Arnold Umformtechnik has developed a completely new production process, especially for Powertite.

Quick Release “Retractable” Fasteners for Quick Changeover and Frequent Set Ups https://industrialmachinerydigest.com/material-handling/conveyors/quick-release-retractable-fasteners-for-quick-changeover-and-frequent-set-ups/ Sat, 30 Mar 2024 15:42:23 +0000 https://industrialmachinerydigest.com/?p=79087 Fixtureworks (Fraser, MI), a leading North American manufacturer and supplier of clamps, fixturing accessories, machine tool components and rollers & bumpers, now offers a complete line of quick release quarter turn “retractable” fasteners/clamps to complement its existing line of quarter turn clamps.

The retractable feature allows the shank to retract and slide on the base without interference from the fastener. The fasteners are mounted to the fixture and the receptacle is mounted to the base. They are available in standard and heavy-duty sizes and come in various styles. As the fastener is inserted into the receptacle, the pins on the fastener align with the grooves in the receptacle. Turning the knob, which is available in either stainless steel or plastic, one quarter turn aligns and locks the fastener into place.

Retractable fasteners provide positive locking in quick change applications where there is frequent disassembly of a fixture and allow for consistent fastening force eliminating the chance for under or over tightening by the operator. They are designed to be used with cam receptacles—either embedded mount or thin-plate mount. Retractable fasteners provide changeover solutions to packaging, food processing, printing machines or assembly and checking fixtures just to name a few. The fasteners are marked with “on” and “off” indicators to show the position of the fastening pins. The bodies and shanks are made from 1045 carbon steel with an electroless nickel plated finish, or 303 stainless steel. The pins are made from 304 stainless steel.

Retractable fasteners are for use with plate thickness of 6-14 mm with up to M3 x 0.40 – Depth 3 thread or for heavy-duty plate thickness of 6-20 mm with M3 x 0.50 – Depth 6. A spacer is available to accommodate plate thickness down to 3 mm. The heavy-duty version comes in a regular sized body, also comes in a narrow-body style. Clamping force is 60N and 90N on the standard clamp and 250N and 400N for the heavy-duty version.
